Men's Health Programs
At East Valley Naturopathic Doctors in Mesa, Arizona, we offer two individualized Men's Health programs built around common concerns: Fertility and mood. Both programs start the same way, with a thorough history and targeted lab testing, then move into a treatment plan built around what's actually driving your symptoms, not just what's easiest to prescribe.
Male Fertility Program
Conceiving a child can be stressful for both partners, and while a lot of the pressure tends to fall on the woman, male fertility plays an equally important role. Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after one year of unprotected intercourse. Most couples (80 to 85 percent) conceive within that window, which means roughly 15 percent will have some difficulty.
An estimated 6 percent of adult men are infertile. Some cases trace back to anatomical issues like varicoceles, ductal obstructions, or ejaculatory disorders, but the majority, an estimated 40 to 90 percent, come down to deficient sperm production. Contributing factors include tobacco use, excessive alcohol or marijuana use, excess body weight, certain medications, environmental toxin exposure, restrictive underwear, heat exposure, chronic infections, diet, and endocrine imbalances.
How We Approach Male Fertility
We start with a full history to identify what's likely contributing to a couple's difficulty conceiving, then run both standard and specialized lab work as needed, including:
- A blood Hormone Profile to check testosterone, estrogen, and related markers
- Heavy Metal Toxicity testing
- Environmental Toxicity testing
- Adrenal Function testing
From there, treatment is built around the individual. That often includes nutritional supplementation (vitamins, amino acids, minerals, and antioxidants) to correct deficiencies and counter the effects of environmental toxin exposure, along with targeted botanical medicine and acupuncture where appropriate.
Male Mood Enhancement Program
If you've noticed you're crankier than usual, snapping at people over things that never used to bother you, running out of energy faster (especially during workouts), or dealing with anxiety or low mood that doesn't have an obvious cause, our Mood Enhancement Program is built for exactly that.
Many men in their 40s and 50s experience this as part of andropause, the gradual hormonal shift men go through that parallels menopause in women. (For a full breakdown of what andropause is and how it's treated, see our Andropause guide.) What's less commonly talked about is that mood changes during this transition usually trace back to two separate factors: declining testosterone and declining dopamine, not just one or the other.
How We Approach Male Mood Changes
Alongside standard labs, we typically run:
- A blood Hormone Profile to assess testosterone levels
- A Urinary Neurotransmitter Test to check dopamine and other neurotransmitters that affect mood, motivation, and energy
Once we know which of these (or both) is contributing to how you're feeling, treatment can include nutritional supplementation with targeted vitamins and amino acids, testosterone replacement therapy when appropriate, acupuncture, and botanical medicine, with the goal of getting you back to feeling like yourself.
Common Questions
How is male infertility diagnosed?
Diagnosis starts with a detailed history and a blood Hormone Profile, followed by specialized testing like Heavy Metal Toxicity, Environmental Toxicity, or Adrenal Function testing depending on what the history suggests.
Is low mood in men always related to testosterone?
Not always. Testosterone decline is one common driver, but low dopamine can cause very similar symptoms. That's why we test for both rather than assuming one cause.
Can lifestyle factors really affect male fertility?
Yes. Tobacco and marijuana use, excess alcohol, excess body weight, certain medications, environmental toxins, and even prolonged heat exposure (tight underwear, hot tubs) can all affect sperm production and motility.
Fertility and mood both come down to the same idea: Symptoms are signals, not a guessing game. Lab testing tells us what's actually happening in your body, and treatment follows from there, whether that means correcting a nutritional deficiency, addressing a hormone imbalance, or working through more than one factor at once. If either of these sounds familiar, the next step is a conversation with one of our naturopathic physicians, not another year of wondering.
