Understanding Chronic Stress and Its Effects

It is important to acknowledge that every human being feels stress in some form to some degree every day, though many of us do live in partial denial. Our sleeplessness, high blood pressure, our exhaustion, our irritability, over-indulging, our anxiety and depression, our stiff joints and tight muscles, can all just be symptoms of minute stress episodes that accumulate throughout the day.

Many people live in a constant state of being busy without recognizing how daily stressors may be affecting their health. By failing to recognize the stress around you, you may miss the opportunity to reduce its impact and improve your overall well-being.

Stress has been reduced to two basic problems. First, problems with perception, and second, problems in communication. This might be an oversimplification of stress. Many other factors influence stress and its expression, including energy, mood disorders, traumatic brain injuries, post-traumatic stress disorders, and the current level of demands on each individual of their extending circumstances.

Stress can present differently for everyone. Some individuals may notice emotional symptoms, while others experience physical changes such as headaches, digestive concerns, muscle tension, fatigue, or changes in sleep patterns.

At East Valley Naturopathic Doctors, we understand that effective stress management requires looking at the whole person rather than focusing only on individual symptoms.

How Chronic Stress Impacts Your Health

The reality is, most people do not see a connection between stress and their health. Stress can be paralyzing and even deadly. Day-to-day anxieties, depression, headaches, insomnia, fatigue, eczema, and even digestive complaints can all be side effects from stress. Stress often leads to overindulgence of food and drink, which only feeds into the unhealthy nature of chronic disease and chronic stress, which then become entwined.

When stress becomes ongoing, the body can remain in a heightened state of alert. This prolonged stress response can influence multiple systems, including the nervous system, immune system, hormones, and energy production.

The first system to manage stress is the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis, or HPA Axis for short. This system secretes cortisol, adrenaline, and noradrenaline in both short-term and chronic stress states. If they are produced in sufficient amounts, we are able to handle and recover from the stress.

If the initiating stressors continue, then cortisol may remain elevated along with adrenaline, putting the whole body into an ongoing fight or flight stress response. This state of stress response has negative consequences on the immune system and leads to immunosuppression.

Over time, chronic stress may contribute to difficulty recovering from daily challenges, persistent fatigue, poor sleep, and reduced resilience.

Stress, Fatigue, and Hormone Balance

Long-term stress can place significant demands on the body’s ability to regulate energy and maintain balance.

In a state of immunosuppression, past viral or bacterial infections may reactivate (as expressed in elevations of antibodies in labs) and lead to fatigue. This fatigue further exacerbates the stress response, because it takes energy to handle stress. One of the long-term consequences of unrelenting fatigue and stress is that both cortisol and adrenaline are eventually depleted, leading to adrenal fatigue.

Adrenal fatigue is exacerbated by the fact that it may begin to deplete not only adrenaline and cortisol, but also norepinephrine as well. Norepinephrine is the brain’s main neurotransmitter, designed to support us against stress and allow us to recover.

At East Valley Naturopathic Doctors in Mesa, AZ, we evaluate each patient individually to determine what factors may be contributing to ongoing fatigue, stress, and difficulty recovering.

Natural Stress Management Support in Mesa

Every person responds to stress differently. Because of this, stress management should be personalized based on your symptoms, health history, lifestyle, and individual needs.

Our approach starts with restoring energy levels by assessing and addressing both hormone and neurotransmitter levels. In addition, genetic testing may further elucidate genetic weaknesses in the system, which produce lower-than-average levels of functioning neurotransmitters. The genetic defects leave some patients more susceptible to stress than those without the genetic markers.

In addition, assessing immune function and treatment of reactivated latent infections will improve energy and maximize stress response.

Depending on your individual evaluation, stress management recommendations may include:

  • Nutritional support and dietary recommendations
  • Hormone and neurotransmitter evaluation
  • Targeted supplementation
  • Lifestyle recommendations
  • Immune system support
  • Nervous system regulation therapies
  • Neurofeedback and other supportive therapies when appropriate

Our goal is to help identify the underlying contributors to your stress response and create a plan that supports your long-term health.

Neurofeedback for Stress Management

For some individuals experiencing chronic stress, burnout, or nervous system dysregulation, brain-based therapies may be considered as part of a comprehensive approach.

Neurofeedback is a specialized therapy using the application of electrodes to read and measure brain waves. When the circuit has been disrupted and ANS dysregulation exists, it is measurable and observable in dysregulated or irregular brain wave patterns.

A Neurofeedback specialist will then send back to the brain unnoticeable micro-currents which tell the brain to reset and restore normal ANS function. This therapy allows patients to return to normal ANS regulation, thus restoring or recovering from the effects of “burn-out” or adrenal fatigue that too often persists for years following chronic and debilitating stress.

At East Valley Naturopathic Doctors, neurofeedback and other supportive therapies are considered based on your individual health goals and evaluation.
